Research has shown that the quality of life for people living with memory loss due to advanced Alzheimer’s disease can be improved by stimulating the five basic senses (smell, sight, taste, touch and sound). This kind of non-verbal stimuli bring back pleasant old memories which are very comforting for someone coping with the utterly confused state of being that accompanies aging with memory loss diseases.
Sensations is a garden designed for the enjoyment of Highland residents and their families. A lovely outdoor retreat. A quite place to share a hug. A pleasant setting where the beauty of nature can be seen and felt by all.

Smell ~ The fragrance from a nearby rose garden mingles with the fresh smell of cedar that permeates the air around our spacious gazebo. An inviting place to relax in and out-of-doors, protected from the sun.
Sight ~ The lush beauty of delphiniums, hollyhocks and lavender are often a reminder of younger days. Our antique garden gives an opportunity to enjoy today's colorful beauty through the eyes of memories past.
Taste ~ Our herb garden is a place where residents are enticed by the taste of fresh mint, thyme, June berries and strawberries, too, when in season. A tasty treat to the palate - a welcome reminder of childhood.

Touch ~ Sunlight touches the glittering waterfall that splashes into the pond below. Droplets reach out to an extended hand, or to the friendly frog who makes its home amongst the water lilies. And the loving touch of a resident's fingertips finds a petal's softness on an afternoon stroll along the pathway.
Sound ~ A robin's song or the rapid fluttering wings of a humming bird, as it feasts on bright coral bells, can be heard by a listening ear. So, too, can the sound of water as it cascades down a stone path and splashes into a pond below that is home to a familiar, friendly frog.
